CLE morality

A) The action that I chose is gambling. This action can be considered as right since it is not prohibited by law. It is an accepted norm, and the basis for this decision is authority and the current opinion of the general public. There could be a situation where gambling is not considered as bad or sinful when the person is forced to gamble by another person, and that the person does not know that gambling is wrong since he never gambled before. This is not sinful because he cannot choose to not gamble since he is being forced, and that he does not have knowledge about gambling, in other words, he does not have adequate knowledge and freedom in this decision. Since he does not have knowledge about gambling, he will not know that this can bring him serious harm. The three criteria for classifying an action to be sinful is if and only if, it is a grave matter and/or the person has adequate knowledge, and/or the person has adequate freedom. Since the person in this situation does not fulfill any of the three criteria, then this action can be considered as not sinful. I would be a moral rationalist since I consider both the general situation and the particular situation. In this case, I believe that gambling can be considered as morally wrong, however there are times that it cannot be considered as sinful.

B) Hey friend, gambling is a very important issue nowadays. You can gain a lot if you gamble, but you also risk losing more than you can afford. It’s possible that you can earn money really fast, but you may be addicted to it, and in the end, you will lose more money than you earned. I know that gambling can bring a lot of pleasure, but you have to make sure that you first cast suspicion on your actions, since if you don’t you may regret it. If you’re unsure if gambling is wrong, assume that it’s wrong. It’s better to be safe than sorry. You also have to make sure that you know the effects of gambling. By doing so, you will be able to make a good decision. Even though, I’m telling you that gambling is wrong, you have to make the final decision. You have the choice of ignoring what I just said, or following it. In the end, you have a conscience that will help you make your decisions by considering the current situation, the values that need to be protected, the relevant moral teachings and norms involved, and the good and bad effects of gambling. I hope that you will be able to choose the right decision. Good Luck.

Stance against GMO

I support genetically modified food since there are a lot of benefits that it brings. It can increase nutrition on common food, which would help impoverished countries, and it can also give disease resistance. Although there are criticisms about it regarding environmental issues and health risks, the advantages still outweigh the disadvantages. I also believe that if the genetically modified food makes the food taste better, then it doesn’t matter at all if it harms us since we’ll all die anyway.

Butylated hydroxyanisole and butylated hydroxytoluene are synthetic antioxidants that are put in food to preserve the lipids. BHA and BHT are both safe but some people have difficulty metabolizing these antioxidants, which lead to health and behavioral problems. Oxygen reacts with BHA and BHT before it reacts with the lipids, so these antioxidants prolong the shelf life of foods. In connection to health issues, like cancer. There is no evidence that directly links these antioxidants with cancer, but there can still be a relationship between them. Overall, these antioxidants are useful and the advantages outweight the disadvantages.

Type of oil in cooking kropek

Vegetable oil and Canola oil made the kropek taste like prawns.

Butter made the kropek taste like chicharon.

Palm oil was the worst one since it made the kropek taste like soap.

The best oil would be vegetable oil, then butter, then Canola oil, then palm oil.

Why do they think that those foods are weird?
These food are weird since a country has its own culture and things out of their own culture are considered different or weird for them. For example, I would find snake wine weird since I never see snakes in dishes however if I was born and raised in Vietnam, I would see it as an ordinary piece of food. The culture depicts how people see food.

What is food?
Food is a product that gives nutritional benefits to the body.

What is considered as a normal food and what is not?
Normal food is determined by the culture of people. Food that is normal in a country’s culture is considered weird in a different culture.

What would be your 5 weirdest food?
1) Baby mice wine
2) Mopane caterpillars
3) Codfish Sperm
4) Fried Tarantulas
5) Stink Bugs

VC with Dubai Modern High School

Last December 8,2011, Xavier School had a video conference with Dubai Modern High School. I was lucky enough to be able to participate in this conference since there were a lot of great insights that came out because of this conference.

The video conference started of with introductory videos from each school. From the videos, we were able to ask more questions and make our conversation more engaging. Our school talked about the symbolism of the school coat of arms, stallion and the uniqueness of learning in a Jesuit School while the other school talked about their school’s focus on leadership and excellence. After the introduction, both schools started to talk about faith. I was surprised to find out that our views on faith weren’t that different. All of us were able to acknowledge that different faiths can come together without any conflict. We were also able to talk more on the service activities that each school has. This helped me understand more on the perspectives on faith that Dubai Modern High School has. One of the major insights that we were able to agree on was that peoples’ joy and happiness are the driving forces that makes us do more. I feel that this is true since the goal of seeing people happy is one of my main reasons in exerting my efforts in whatever I do. No major technical difficulties arose during the video conference so it was a great success.

Through this video conference, I was able to learn that breaking cultural barriers and overcoming stereotypes isn’t difficult. I thought that it would be harder to converse with the other school since I had the idea that our beliefs would have been conflicting, however this video conference proved me wrong. Our beliefs weren’t that different so it was easier for me to talk during our conversation. All in all, I was able to learn a lot from the students in Dubai Modern High School. Their insights on faith helped me deepen my understanding in the similarities and differences between faiths of different countries.
